A Walking Bait That Adds Unpredictable Action to Every Twitch

Swimming Action

1. It Never Moves Exactly the Same Way Twice—Giving Bass Less Time to Inspect and Reject It

The Waka-Pen’s biggest advantage is that it never repeats the exact same action, even when you work it with a steady rhythm.

Instead of simply walking side to side, it may suddenly dive headfirst, roll and flash on its side just below the surface, then shoot back out of the water. The result is the unpredictable movement of a baitfish struggling to escape.

This erratic action comes from an internal weight that moves freely from front to back.

On most walking-baits, a moving weight is used mainly to improve casting distance. The Waka-Pen also uses its moving weight to deliberately throw the lure off balance every time you work it.

You do not have to create every dive, roll, or direction change with precise rod work. Keep a steady cadence, and the Waka-Pen will break its own rhythm, giving bass less time to follow the lure, study it, and turn away.

2. A Trail of Bubbles Breaks Up the Lure’s Outline and Makes It Harder to Identify

Each time the Waka-Pen is worked, it produces small bubbles and splashes that make its outline harder for fish to see clearly.

The bubbles are created by the small cupped mouth at the front of the lure. When you twitch the rod, the cup catches water, helps pull the lure into a dive, and leaves bubbles around the body.

Those bubbles do more than create sound and draw attention. They also break up the lure’s silhouette, making it harder for bass to clearly identify its shape and movement.

Combined with the unpredictable action of the moving internal weight, the bubble trail creates a more complex presentation than the lure body could produce on its own.

3. Proven Fish-Catching Action Meets Haruhiko Murakami’s Wakasagi-Inspired Design

The Waka-Pen carries on the design concept of the discontinued Hasu-Pen 92, a walking-bait created by Haruhiko Murakami during his time at Tsunekichi, the company that preceded Issei.

The Hasu-Pen was designed to dive and make sharp turns without requiring difficult rod work. The Waka-Pen builds on that idea with its own moving-weight system and a body shape inspired by the Japanese wakasagi.

Its body is a stylized version of a wakasagi with a full, egg-heavy belly and a slightly arched profile.

However, the shape was not created only for appearance. The body profile, cupped mouth, and internal weight all work together to produce irregular movement on and just below the surface.

The result is a distinctly Murakami-style walking-bait that combines proven action with a beautifully sculpted baitfish profile.

4. Let the Current Add Natural Changes You Cannot Create with Rod Work Alone

The Waka-Pen is effective not only in still water, but also in rivers and other areas with current.

Cast it upstream and work it while allowing the lure to drift with the flow. Your rod movements, the shifting internal weight, and the current will all affect the lure at the same time.

This can make the Waka-Pen suddenly turn sideways, dive below the surface, lose its balance, or jump back out of the water. These natural changes are difficult to reproduce in still water with rod work alone.

Its intentionally unstable action becomes especially effective around current seams, eddies, and banks where baitfish are likely to be pushed off balance.

5. Use Braid or Monofilament for the Waka-Pen’s Full Surface Action

Braid or nylon monofilament is recommended for getting the Waka-Pen’s quick walking action and sudden bursts back to the surface.

Fluorocarbon is denser than water and sinks. On a long cast, the sinking line can pull the lure downward, limiting its side-to-side movement and preventing it from breaking back through the surface as easily.

The Waka-Pen can still be worked on fluorocarbon at close range. However, braid or monofilament is the better choice when covering more water or trying to get the lure’s full light, erratic action.

6. Two Sizes Help You Match the Forage and Conditions

As of 2026, the Waka-Pen is available in two sizes: the original Waka-Pen 90 and the smaller Waka-Pen 55.
