A Steep-Diving Crankbait That Stays Tight to the Bottom and Cover

1. A Crankbait That Stays Tight to Cover and the Bottom

Megabass offers a wide range of crankbaits, including the GRIFFON, SUPER-Z, and DEEP-X series. Each is carefully designed not only around diving depth and swimming action, but also around how the bait behaves when it contacts cover or the bottom.

Among them, the iPX is designed to stay tight to cover and the bottom rather than kicking far away after contact. This allows anglers to trace key structure more precisely and keep the bait in the strike zone for longer.

That becomes especially important when bass are holding tight to rock, hard bottom, ledges, or other structure. In stained water, cold-water conditions, or whenever bass are reluctant to move far to feed, the iPX excels at keeping the bait close to where the fish are holding.

2. A Steep Dive Angle Keeps the Bait in the Strike Zone Longer

One of the most important characteristics of a deep-diving crankbait is how quickly it can reach its intended running depth.

A crankbait does not begin swimming at its maximum depth the moment it hits the water. It gradually dives during the retrieve, reaches its target depth, and then begins to rise again as it approaches the angler.

That means even a crankbait capable of reaching 13 feet only spends part of each cast actually running near that depth. The faster it reaches the target zone, the more of the retrieve can be spent where the bass are.

To accomplish this, the iPX features Megabass’ proprietary Forward Roll Weight Transfer System. Its front and rear weights shift forward during the dive, creating a nose-down posture that drives the bait into its target range at a steep angle.

The uniquely shaped bill, featuring a distinctive opening, continues to grab water efficiently as the lure’s diving angle changes. This helps combine a steep dive angle with stable action while supporting the iPX’s ability to keep digging along the bottom.

3. Proven at the Highest Level Before It Even Reached Production

The iPX was developed by Bassmaster Elite Series pro Brandon Palaniuk in collaboration with Megabass founder Yuki Ito.

But this is more than simply a crankbait carrying a top pro’s name.

During the 2025 Bassmaster Elite Series event at Lake Okeechobee, Palaniuk put a prototype iPX into competition before the lure had even been released. During practice, he made only two casts with the iPX and caught approximately a 2-pound bass followed by a 6-pounder. That immediate response became one of the key reasons he chose to return to the area during the tournament.

The area featured riprap dropping sharply into deeper water, along with trenches, hard bottom, and other depth changes. The bass were also shifting position throughout the day rather than holding in one exact spot.

When the fish were positioned higher on the ledge, Palaniuk used the BIG-M 4.0. When they moved tighter to the drop, he rotated to the iPX.

The reasons were clear: its steeper dive angle, more compact profile, harder-hitting wobble, and ability to maintain bottom contact as it crossed the ledge.

In other words, the iPX’s key characteristics are more than catalog claims. Its core design concept—reaching the target depth quickly, making aggressive bottom contact, and maintaining that contact through the retrieve—was already being put to work at the highest level of U.S. tournament bass fishing before the lure ever reached the market, helping Palaniuk secure the win.

4. Choose the Model Based on the Depth You Want to Target

As of 2026, the iPX lineup includes two models designed for different depth ranges: the iPX-12 and iPX-16.

The iPX-12 has a primary running depth of approximately 12 ft (3.6 m) and a maximum diving depth of approximately 16 ft (4.8 m). It is well suited for targeting mid- to deep-range breaks, riprap, hard bottom, and similar structure.

The iPX-16 has a primary running depth of approximately 16 ft (4.8 m) and a maximum diving depth of approximately 18 ft (5.4 m). It covers deeper ledges, channels, offshore hard bottom, and other situations where the iPX-12 cannot maintain consistent bottom contact.

5. When Conditions Get Tough, Rotate Between the iPX and SUPER-Z Z3

When bass are holding tight to a drop or hard bottom and you want a crankbait to aggressively maintain bottom contact, the iPX is an extremely effective option.

Its tall-sided body produces strong vibration and intense flashing, however, giving the bait a relatively strong presence in the water. When bass become less willing to respond to that level of attraction—such as during cold-water periods or other tough conditions—the SUPER-Z Z3 becomes an excellent alternative.

Like the iPX, the SUPER-Z Z3 is designed to stay tight to the bottom instead of kicking far away after contact. However, its ultra-compact 2-inch(53mm) body presents a much smaller profile, making it easier for reluctant bass to commit when a stronger crankbait is simply too much.
