Instead of the typical vertical cuts found on conventional swimbaits, the entire body is sculpted with a multi-faceted design. This allows the bait to immediately generate a smooth, fluid, lifelike movement as soon as it catches water.

The GILL FLAT features what lure designer Haruhiko Murakami calls a “soul-level design.”

At the same time, the full-body sculpting gives it a scale-like appearance, enhancing its realism. Even with minimal input, it produces a strong presence in the water, replicating the natural, broad-profile movement unique to bluegill. The thick body profile further reinforces the silhouette of a real bluegill, making it highly convincing to bass.

2. A natural bottom-standing posture and realistic bluegill profile trigger bites—even on the pause

When it hits the bottom, the GILL FLAT naturally stands naturally on the bottom. Because it creates very little unnatural presence, it often draws strikes even when left completely still. In fact, many bites occur during dead-sticking.

From actual sight-fishing observations, bass are first drawn in by the lifelike splash and bulky silhouette unique to a soft bait. Once they commit and close the distance, they frequently strike without hesitation.

3. Adjustable buoyancy with the included foam inserts

By cutting the foam to your desired length and inserting it into the internal air chamber, you can fine-tune sink rate and posture.

This allows for precise control—from a slow sink to near-suspending setups—depending on conditions and fish behavior. The ability to adjust how the bait presents itself is one of its biggest advantages.

4. Start with an easy drop-shot hook setup

While the GILL FLAT supports a wide range of rigging options, the simplest way to start is with a drop-shot style hook setup. By lightly nose-hooking the bait and adding a nail-weight, you can quickly achieve a well-balanced presentation. (For the GILL FLAT Jr., a jighead is also an excellent option.) If this is your first time using the bait, this setup is highly recommended. When using a drop-shot hook or jighead, reinforcing the bait with a spring or keeper is recommended to prevent tearing.

5. Offset hook setup for maximum realism and performance

Despite being rigged through the side, the GILL FLAT is designed to swim naturally and maintain a realistic posture, closely mimicking the silhouette of a real bluegill. This setup also improves performance in heavy cover.

Fine-tuning hook placement, nail-weight selection, and overall balance is essential. Most importantly, the hook must be set perfectly straight—otherwise, the bait will not swim correctly. For improved hook-up ratio, slightly bending the hook point outward (about 1 mm) is also effective.
