The GRIFFON, embodying the concept of "Compact x Impact," debuted in 1998 as one of MEGABASS's popular crankbaits. Inspired by the vibrant, energetic atmosphere of a cozy Italian locale, Mr. Ito, the president of MEGABASS, created the GRIFFON. Despite its compact size, it boasts significant action and sharpness, making it a longstanding bestseller since its launch.

The GRIFFON has undergone several model changes over the years, evolving under the careful guidance of Mr. Ito. From the original GRIFFON's debut in 1998, through minor changes and the introduction of derivative models, the first full model change occurred in 2016, marking the birth of the second-generation authentic GRIFFON. Now, in 2024, we have the third generation.

What sets the GRIFFON apart is its pinball action, which dramatically springs up when hitting obstacles, a feature surprising for its compact size. The second generation was designed with an emphasis on improved operability from an angler's perspective. The 2024 edition combines the original's outstanding irregular action with the second generation's responsiveness, culminating in the ultimate GRIFFON experience.

The original GRIFFON's charm lies unmistakably in its nimble and expansive escape action, reminiscent of a pinball, upon contacting obstacles. At its launch, compact crankbaits that exhibited such wild behavior were rare, leaving anglers amazed by its incredible fish-catching ability.

The 2016 full model change, which emphasized improved operability, somewhat sealed away its flamboyant action. As a result, some anglers continued to cherish the original version, which was discontinued at the same time.

Against this backdrop, the third-generation GRIFFON has been unveiled. With a return to its roots, it combines the original's bass-confounding, wild, irregular action with the stable operability pursued in the second generation, giving rise to the new GRIFFON.

Even a steady retrieve can induce a "erratic action," where it veers off course to the left and right, and its action that leaps upon contacting obstacles can trigger reaction bites from bass that were previously unresponsive.

Streamlined Design Meets Unique Structure for Enhanced Control and Pinball Action

As mentioned earlier, both the original and the third-generation GRIFFON share the appeal of their erratic action upon contact with obstacles, but the difference lies in their operability. The original GRIFFON generated unpredictable action by directly encountering turbulent water flows. In contrast, the third-generation maintains high responsiveness by building on the streamlined body design adopted during the second generation's model change. Moreover, it deliberately incorporates MEGABASS's unique hydrodynamic body structure, which allows for interaction with water, making the pinball action upon contact with obstacles or the bottom even more dynamic than the original.

Enhanced Sharpness in Action with Tungsten-Weighted Design

By switching to tungsten for the internal weights, the lure achieves higher density and smaller diameter, resulting in an increased action pitch. While the original GRIFFON lagged behind the second generation in terms of high-pitch action, the third generation excels in both the slow action favored by the original and the high-pitch action characteristic of the second generation. This versatility allows for acrobatic actions at any speed, enticing bass to bite.

3. Mastering Diverse Applications Across Two Ranges

Like its predecessors, the GRIFFON comes in two range options. The SR-X GRIFFON covers depths to approximately 1.3m (around 4.3 feet), extending a bit beyond the usual range of typical shallow cranks. It maintains its action without faltering and can complete its swim to the end. The MR-X GRIFFON caters to depths of 1.5m to about 2.5m (roughly 4.9 to 8.2 feet), making it ideal for targeting the edges of weeds and other similar areas. It can pique the interest of bass hiding beneath the weeds, drawing them out for the catch. Adapt your choice to the conditions of the fishing spot.

4. High Straight-Running Crankbait with Reactive Bounce Upon Obstacle Contact

While the GRIFFON series is known for its crankbaits that dramatically bounce upon contacting obstacles or the bottom, MEGABASS also offers the SUPER Z series, which embodies the opposite concept. The SUPER Z series features lures that, instead of bouncing off, cling to the bottom upon contact and can be reeled in without detaching. This characteristic makes them ideal for situations where bass hiding spots are well-defined or when fish are less active and not responding as expected to lures. In such cases, the GRIFFON is used to strike obstacles, aiming for unpredictable actions to provoke reactions. Conversely, the SUPER Z is preferred for tracing extensive bottom areas or when bass are closely hugging the bottom.

The SUPER Z series is available in three types based on diving depth: Z1 with a maximum of 2.3m (approximately 7.5 feet), Z2 reaching up to 2.9m (about 9.5 feet), and Z3 capable of diving down to a maximum of 4.3m (roughly 14.1 feet).
