1. Exceptional Stability at Shallow Depths, Even at Ultra-High Speeds
The I x I FURIOUS stands out for its ability to consistently maintain a shallow range, regardless of retrieval speed. Available in both 0.5m(1.64ft) and 1.5m(4.92ft) diving depth models, it represents a significant advancement compared to other lures. Typically, even those labeled as 50cm(1.6ft) shallow runners tend to briefly dive down to around. 80cm(2.2ft) before stabilizing at 50cm (as shown in the lower part of the diagram). However, the I x I FURIOUS 0.5 is designed to hold its ground in the ultra-shallow 50cm zone, from the moment it hits the water until the end, even when retrieved at breakneck speeds
The increased water resistance that comes with faster retrieval speeds usually makes it challenging to stay in the shallows. The I x I FURIOUS overcomes this with its innovative "virtual lip"—a specially designed hole at the front of the lure.
This feature channels water from the front to below the gills, effectively counterbalancing the frontal water pressure with the outward flow. As a result, the lure remains stable and horizontal in the water, even as the pace picks up.
Despite its pressure-evading structure, the I x I FURIOUS provides a satisfying feel during retrieval, akin to a lighter crankbait. It also retains the I x I series’ renowned ability to stay on course, even when making contact with the bottom. The water drawn in through the hole helps to minimize side-to-side wobbling, ensuring a straight trajectory even at top speeds.
Moreover, thanks to MEGABASS’s proprietary Micro LBO weight system, the I x I FURIOUS also boasts exceptional casting distance—a hallmark of the I x I series. Combining straight-line stability at ultra-fast speeds in shallow waters with outstanding casting performance, these features truly define what the I x I FURIOUS is all about.
2. The Journey to Completion: Mr. Ito and Mr. Imae's Unique Vision for a Small Crankbait - The I x I FURIOUS
The I x I FURIOUS was created as a completely new concept based on the unfinished TYPE-2 of the I x I SHAD series. Mr. Ito and Mr. Imae were not satisfied with just filling the diving depth gap between the already completed TYPE-R and TYPE-3, aiming instead to create something extraordinary. Their vision was to craft a small crankbait, specialized for shallow waters, that could maintain a depth within 50cm even when retrieved at high speeds, travel straight and far, and continue on its course even when hitting the bottom.
The challenge they faced during development was distinguishing their creation from the IMAKATSU’s Gekiasa Shad. The solution the duo arrived at was to place a hole in the front part of the lure. However, ensuring that this feature didn't just become a marketing gimmick required extensive trial and error, and the development process was fraught with difficulties. At one point, it seemed as if the project had come to a standstill, but Mr. Ito was actually continually revising the prototypes and even sent passionate letters about the progress to Mr. Imae. After approximately two years of dedicated development, leveraging Mr. Ito’s talent for turning ideals into reality, the I x I FURIOUS was finally completed. Featuring a hole in its front part and a silhouette somewhat resembling a jerkbait, the I x I FURIOUS successfully realized the dream of "explosive speed, shallow depth, long distance, and straight trajectory.”
3. Enticing Reactions in Clear Shallows with High-Speed Retrieval
The I x I FURIOUS shines when retrieved at ultra-high speeds, maintaining its action without faltering, and continuing in a straight line even when making contact with the bottom. This makes it an indispensable tool for high-speed searching in shallow waters, especially when bass are clinging closely to the bottom in shallows. In expansive shallow areas like the Kasumigaura Lake: the second largest lake in Japan, it's likely to become a go-to lure.
Furthermore, in clear and tough conditions, it's the I x I FURIOUS's time to shine. You might find success in provoking bass reactions with a blazing fast retrieval. In spring, when the water temperature has risen to a certain extent, and in autumn, even during times when bass actively chase bait, if there is a lack of response from the bass, the I x I FURIOUS is one of the best choices. This could very well flip the switch in even the most cautious bass, compelling them to strike. The ability to search quickly at ultra-high speeds allows for a great fishing tempo, proving invaluable when you want to thoroughly and aggressively cover the water.
4. The Two Shallow Runners of I x I SHAD: TYPE-R and FURIOUS
In the I x I SHAD series, there exists the TYPE-R model, capable of swimming in the 1m(3.28ft) range. Although there is a slight difference in diving depth, both models share the ability to maintain straight-line stability even when making bottom contact and can be effectively retrieved in shallow waters. So, how should one specifically choose between the TYPE-R and the FURIOUS?
The primary difference lies in the fact that the FURIOUS can be retrieved much faster. The I x I FURIOUS excels in situations where the bass are feeding aggressively, even during tough conditions, and you need to trigger their predatory instincts. On the other hand, the I x I SHAD TYPE-R is best utilized with the idea of eliciting reactions during periods of low water temperature when the bass are less active and less likely to feed.
