Bluegill Swimbait for Everything from Bottom to Shallow Waters
1. SLEEPER Series Bluegill Swimbait
The SLEEPER GILL, a bluegill model from MEGABASS's popular SLEEPER series of swimbaits, is equipped with numerous features.
Snagless performance with hidden hooks
The fin on its back is split, with the hook nestled inside, which reduces snagging and allows for bold approaches around cover. Even though the hook is hidden, the body compresses during a bite, exposing the hook point, so there's no need to worry about the hook coming loose. It ensures a firm hold in the bass's jaw without letting go.
Flat Body Mimicking a Real Bluegill
With its flat-sided yet tall body, it closely resembles a real bluegill, almost deceiving the eye. The allure lies in its visually striking appearance, reminiscent of an actual fish, thanks to MEGABASS's signature realistic paint and form. This makes it irresistibly appealing to the touch.
Effective Seasons
Bluegill baits is effective during the following two periods:
1: Spring, March to May
Bluegill are attracted to the eggs laid by bass and will approach them, prompting the bass to sometimes lunge and bite. This behavior is known as "defensive feeding," where the bass aims to protect its spawn from being eaten.
2: Early Summer to Mid-Summer
During early to mid-summer, which is the spawning period for bluegill, bass target the less energetic bluegill. This period coincides with the bass's post-spawn recovery phase, making bluegill an ideal baitfish for the bass.
2. Enticing Bites with Drop and Retrieve Techniques
Vibrations During the Fall Trigger the Predatory Instinct
One notable feature of the SLEEPER GILL is that it starts its action the moment it begins to fall. During the fall, the swim tail vibrates, causing the body to roll as it descends. This rolling fall turns on the bite switch. It is particularly effective to cast during feeding times, such as at dawn or dusk.
Swimbait Capable of High-Speed Retrieves
While there's a common concern that swimbaits may flip over and swim belly-up when retrieved quickly, the SLEEPER GILL is designed with a calculated weight system to prevent this. Despite its tall, flat-sided body, it consistently swims with its dorsal fin upward.
Additionally, though somewhat advanced, using the heavier 3/4oz model for fast retrieves in shallow waters can be effective. While a normal retrieve speed keeps it swimming in the mid to lower range, a fast retrieve can trigger the predatory switch of bass in the mid to upper layers through a reactionary response.
Swim it slowly when the bass are less active
Even when retrieved slowly, the quality of the fin tail's vibration does not diminish, and it continues to perform its action. By swimming it just above the bottom and occasionally hitting rocks, you can mimic the behavior of foraging on the bottom. During this, the bait maintains its upright posture without flipping over, minimizing the risk of snagging even when swimming across the bottom.
3. Contrasting with Swimbaits Designed for Bottom Fishing
MEGABASS offers several well-known swimbaits beyond the SLEEPER series. The versatile MAGDRAFT, its action somewhat at the opposite spectrum with a slim and tight action suitable for slow retrieves, is the MAGSLOWL. Furthermore, the DEADSLOWL is designed for dead slow retrieves in shallow waters, adapting the characteristics of the MAGSLOWL for such conditions.
From the same SLEEPER series, there's also the DARK SLEEPER. The SLEEPER series is known for excelling at reaching a range just below the middle-swimming MAGDRAFT. It should be noted that with the DARK SLEEPER, there are also 1/4oz shallow water options available, so it's not accurate to generalize for all. The best choice among them should be based on the desired use range and reeling speed, particularly as these factors vary with the swimbait's weight.
The SLEEPER GILL, being a heavier swimbait, excels in bottom retrieves, especially slow ones, and can easily navigate deep waters. However, as an advanced technique mentioned earlier, its strength also lies in its ability to perform fast retrieves in shallow waters, thanks to its heavier body. Lighter swimbaits struggle to sink to deep waters and tend to rise quickly when retrieved in shallow areas. The SLEEPER GILL, with its significant weight, can quickly reach deeper spots and attack a deeper range than typical swimbaits. Once accustomed, it can also handle fast retrieves in mid to shallow waters, making it a versatile option that adds to its appeal.
