Versatile Mini Lure: Perform Like a Crankbait or a Jerkbait, Designed for Ultra-Fast Retrieval
Swimming Action
1. Compact Body and Tight Action: A Crankbait Effective for Tricky Bass
The Soul Shad stands out as a crankbait less likely to be ignored by bass. Compared to standard crankbaits, its compact size and tight movement more convincingly mimic a real baitfish. Ideal for situations where bass have become wary of the strong vibrations of typical crankbaits but you still want to efficiently cover the field. While it's fundamentally an all-season lure, it shines particularly during the post-spawn when bass roam the mid-depths, and in winter, when less active bass are looking for an easy meal resembling a small baitfish.
2. Secret Weapon: Ultra-Fast Retrieve to Induce Reaction Bites
The Soul Shad excels in ultra-fast retrieves. Thanks to its superior body balance, it maintains straight tracking even at high speeds without rolling over. Its reduced resistance compared to typical crankbaits also contributes to this performance. For inducing reaction bites with a fast retrieve, using it in open water without obstacles is recommended. It compels bass to strike impulsively with speeds unachievable by other crankbaits. Additionally, incorporating a pause after a high-speed retrieve creates an opportunity for a strike, making it a highly effective technique.
3. A Crankbait with Jerkbait-like Duality
The Soul Shad combines the deep-diving ability of a crankbait with the jerk and twitch usability of a jerkbait. It's your go-to when crankbaits fail to fully entice and jerkbaits can't reach the bass's range. Its slender body design facilitates sharp darting actions, prompting bass to strike. Jerking and twitching are particularly effective when straight retrieves don't provoke bites. Additionally, its long lip allows it to navigate around obstacles where a jerkbait might get snagged. A surprising technique to try is jerk and twitch during sight fishing. Passing the lure behind the bass significantly increases the chances of inducing a reaction bite.
4. Extensive Lineup to Meet Angler Demands (Size Variations)
The Soul Shad offers a wide range of sizes to cater to various fishing conditions. The original 58 size is a great starting point, as its versatile size is suitable for any field. Available in both SR and MR types, the 58 allows you to select the right range for your fishing needs.
The 45SP is the smallest model in the series and becomes a powerful tool when bass are preying on small fish.
The 62SP is the only model in the Soul Shad series that comes in DR and DDR settings, perfect for targeting deep areas. It can also be used for deeper dragging from a boat.
The 68SP is the largest model in the series, weighing in at 9g (about 0.3oz), making it suitable for bait tackle use. Despite its size, it retains the original's action, allowing for efficient use with bait tackle.
5. Opt for the Soul Flat When You Need a Slight Increase in Appeal
If you find the appeal of the Soul Shad insufficient for bass, switch to the Soul Flat. While the Soul Shad is known for its natural action, it can sometimes lack the drawing power from a distance. Therefore, in scenarios like vast fields, murky waters, or low-light conditions where a stronger appeal is required for bass, the Soul Flat stands out as the better choice.
On the other hand, the Soul Flat, with its flat-sided body, creates strong vibrations and flashing, effectively appealing to a wide area and catching motivated bass. The flat body design also gives it an advantage when the baitfish are flat, like gills or bream. Using the Soul Shad for regular situations and switching to the Soul Flat when more appeal is needed or when the baitfish are flat will likely lead to an increase in your catch rate.
6. When Snags Are Frequent, It's Time for the D-Bill Shad
If you're experiencing frequent snags with the Soul Shad or Soul Flat, switch to the D-Bill Shad. Although the Soul Shad is known for its erratic action when it hits obstacles, this can also make it prone to snags. The D-Bill Shad, with its distinctive duckbill shape, avoids erratic actions upon hitting obstacles, thus having a higher avoidance capability. It's a floating lure, so if it gets snagged, stopping the retrieve will allow it to float up for easy recovery.
Thanks to its high obstacle avoidance ability, it enables you to target bass lurking around complex cover where the Soul Shad might struggle. Use the Soul Shad in lighter cover or open water, and switch to the D-Bill Shad when targeting tight cover or in situations where the Soul Shad is prone to snagging, for an increased catch rate.
7. The Creator of Soul Shad: A Former Designer from Lucky Craft
The developer of the Soul Shad, former president of Jackall, Mr. Seiji Kato, was originally a designer for Lucky Craft. He is renowned for creating lures like the Baby Shad and the Flash Minnow. The Baby Shad 50, designed by Mr. Kato, sparked a ’Shad-lure’ boom in Japan after becoming a winning lure in Japanese tournaments.
In Japan, shad lures are positioned between jerkbaits and crankbaits, diving like crankbaits while darting like jerkbaits when jerked. They are typically small, around 500mm, and mostly suspending, designed to be used with jerking and stop-and-go techniques (e.g., Megabass's SHADING-X, Imakatsu's Dilemma).
8. Soul Shad's Development Story: Born from Discarded Data?
After leaving Lucky Craft, Mr. Seiji Kato created the Soul Shad for Jackall, with the aim of fulfilling the requirements specified by Jackall's pro staff, Mr. Kazuto Yamaki. These included a lure that swims straight at high speeds, reliably reaches depths of around 2 meters (6.6 ft), measures about 60mm in size, and is capable of long casts.
Mr. Kato revisited a shad design he had previously worked on, testing it in a water tank. Surprisingly, it performed better than expected, but it turned out that this lure was actually a sample made from mistakenly plotted data. This 'discarded' data had already achieved a high level of completion.
Later, Mr. Kato would declare the Soul Shad as one of the most effective lures he had ever developed."
