Iconic Megabass 70mm (2.75”) jerkbait
1. Twenty-five years after its release, Megabass' historic jerkbait, the X-70, is still leading the way.
The reasons for its consistent popularity are the ease with which sharp trick actions can be learned and performed, and its ability to simply get more strikes.
In 1995, when the ban on Lake Nojiri in Japan was lifted, Megabass' trout minnow ‘Great Hunting’ began to be used to target smallmouth Bass. Design enhancement of this lure led to the now famous X-70. With a 3-D center of gravity movement system developed exclusively for Megabass, the X-70 responds quickly to twitches and jerks, making it easy to learn and use trick actions. Because the center of gravity moves three-dimensionally, it also attracts Bass with irregular actions. Minnow lures typically used to have a rounded body, but the flat belly design of the X-70 was revolutionary at the time of development, as it created stronger water pushing action compared to other minnow lures of the same size. Megabass’ realistic paint schemes and strong flash when rolling are also strike attractors.
2. Choose the X-70 if you are teaching young anglers
If you want a large number of hits with an inexperienced angler or young child, choosing the X-70 is a great choice. It is a relatively small minnow (at 70mm) that is easy for small Bass to eat, yet can target the big smallmouth of Lake Nojiri. It gives sharp twitches and darts, and even rolls side to side in a tight wobble during a standard retrieve. And for the novice angler, since it rolls on straight retrieve, it makes it easy to use a twitch-twitch-pull maneuver. This firm rolling action and the flash it presents piques the curiosity of unsuspecting smaller Bass. The size of the X-70 matches Japanese baitfish, so it can be used anywhere, not just for baby Bass, so it is worth having in your tacklebox.
