The Lates is a subsurface bait known for its vigorous rolling action just below the surface. The dynamic rolling action creates a flashing effect that resembles a school of baitfish. This powerful action presents a natural yet noticeable presence to bass focused on the surface, enticing them to bite.
Especially in windy conditions when the surface is choppy, the flashing of the Lates is amplified even further. Even when topwater lures struggle to be effective, the Lates will still catch the attention of bass and increase your chances of getting bit.

2. Targeting reaction bites with well-timed changes in retrieve speed

Fishing the Lates is simple. Basically, just retrieve it at a slow to medium pace. But occasionally slowing down your retrieve will boost the bait's attracting power.
For example, a technique called "Rise Up & Roll" involves decreasing your retrieve speed, causing the lure to rise up towards the surface with a wobbling action. Another technique called "Hovering" is done by first diving the Lates down, then retrieving it as slowly as possible while preventing it from rising to keep it swimming just below the surface. These changes of pace in your retrieve can trigger reaction strikes from bass.
